Blue Valentine
These days, where half of marriages end in divorce, we don’t seem to know what our theories on love are anymore. One of the cutest renditions of Elvis’s “Blue valentine” in a sketch, the film works like a photo album. The film is mainly set in the “future room” of a future-themed motel room where Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling) spend their night where they both agonize over what went wrong. The film shifts back and forth, elegantly cutting between the past and present states of their marriage. I couldn’t get out of my seat by the end, I was so devastated – and also enjoyed the credits roll of fireworks effect. There is a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald that goes along the lines of: the beginning can start however, but the ending must be fireworks. The score is done by Grizzly Bear, which I enjoyed.
